High up above the edge of the Himalayas at an altitude of 3978 m is the Rohtang Pass. The Rohtang is a natural divide between the Kullu valley and the Lahaul and Spiti Valley. The pass is flanked by the Beas River on the south and the Chandra River on the north. The Rohtang pass is located 53 km from Manali and is traversed by the Leh-Manali highway.

Due the low temperatures caused by the high elevation extreme snowfall can occur at anytime even in the summer months posing as a potential hazard for avalanches and rock slides making the Rohtang Pass an extremely dangerous roadway to cross.  Due to the high occurrence of deadly accidents, the name of the pass literally translates to “field of corpses.”

When is the best time of the year to visit?

The best time to visit the Rohtang pass is during favorable weather that can be found in between the months of November to May. Even with the summer months it does not guarantee that the road will be easily passable as the road is covered by snow the whole year due to its extremely high elevation.

Due to the high influx of tourist and the small dimensions and narrowness of the road at bottlenecks, the local government of Manali has strictly regulated the passage in the area. The Rohtang Pass Permit 

The Local Government of Manali is strictly regulating the amount of vehicle traffic in the area for safety and environmental reasons. The Rohtang Pass has a maximum daily limit of 800 Petrol vehicles and 400 Diesel vehicles. The Pass is close on Tuesdays weekly for maintenance of the roadway.
