High up above the edge of the Himalayas at an altitude of 3978 m is the Rohtang Pass. The Rohtang is a natural divide between the Kullu valley and the Lahaul and Spiti Valley. The pass is flanked by the Beas River on the south and the Chandra River on the north. The Rohtang pass is located 53 km from Manali and is traversed by the Leh-Manali highway.

What is the Rohtang Pass?

Passage to the pass is difficult due to the steep gradient of the roadway and the narrow dimensions of the road. The Rohtang Pass is a difficult road to navigate due to the extreme altitude and the ever changing weather conditions along the stretch of the roadway. Due to constant changes in weather conditions and sudden appearance of fog at anytime, the Rohtang Pass is extremely prone to accidents. Due the low temperatures caused by the high elevation extreme snowfall can occur at anytime even in the summer months posing as a potential hazard for avalanches and rock slides making the Rohtang Pass an extremely dangerous roadway to cross.  Due to the high occurrence of deadly accidents, the name of the pass literally translates to “field of corpses.”
